The Battery Research Laboratory is headed by Dr. Bilal El-Zahab, Associate Professor of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computing at Florida International University. The lab specializes in electrochemical energy storage systems especially in emerging battery technologies such as solid-state batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and lithium-air batteries.
The laboratory research is driven by research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, doctoral and masters level graduate assistants, and undergraduate student assistants and interns.
The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art materials synthesis, film coating, coin/pouch/custom cell construction, cycle testing, capacity fade mechanism determination, abusive testing, and disassembly and postmortem characterization. The applicability of our research has driven collaboration and support from industry partners, most notably a recent $4 million project from Lion Battery Technologies, Inc.
